Many modern diesel vehicles are fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters commonly referred to as DPF or FAP
The diesel particulate filters remove chemicals in diesel exhaust fumes before the particles are expelled into the atmosphere.
Eventually most DPF filters will become blocked due to poor regeneration although manufacturers estimate expected life well beyond what it is in reality.
There is a lot of issues caused by diesel particulate filters and when they will not tolerate regeneration the only option is to replace them, and this is NOT cheap.
Whilst the vehicle is under warranty this is not an issue but for people that have DPF failures after the end of warranty the replacement option can be extremely expensive.
Rapid Remap (http://www.rapidremap.co.uk) now offer a service to electronically program OUT the DPF in your vehicle meaning that you will never have to face an expensive replacement bill.
Apart from the financial time bomb that DPF’s represent there are also other short term negative effects, which are outlined below.
The affect of a DPF on MPG
The diesel particulate filter creates an obstruction in the exhaust system and combined with a catalytic converter and you have a restriction of exhaust gas flow, causing inefficiency and reducing MPG
Adding a DPF to an exhaust system actually limits fuel efficiency.
Whilst it was originally intended to reduce diesel exhaust particulates escaping, new low sulphur diesel contains much less of the harmful chemicals the DPF was designed to filter out.
If you would like to avoid the excessive cost of future DPF replacements and improve MPG and power delivery we can reprogram your vehicles ECU to effectively ignore the DPF you won’t get any warning lights on the dash, or the engine going into limp mode.
