Diesel Tuning helps Taxi firm beat recession
A Heath Hayes taxi firm is beating the economic gloom by using modern technology which has saved it £3,600 in fuel costs on three vehicles over the last year.
Now Five Star Taxis say they are introducing the cost-cutting technical know-how across its whole fleet as they replace older vehicles – which could result in savings of around £10,000 a year.
Director Paul Barnes said the “remapping” technology could provide vital costing savings for firms in the current economic downturn and is urging businesses to try out the technology.
The know-how has also received the backing of the Southern Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce who said the potential cost savings could help some firms survive the current recession.
“We’ve seen savings of at least a fifth in our fuel costs in the cars that have been remapped, that’s made a massive difference,” said Mr Barnes.
“It clearly does help relieve a bit of the pressure that is on in the current economic climate.”
Rapid Remap, who remapped the cars for the taxi firm, said customers of the company, also based in Cannock, Staffs had seen a significant improvement in fuel consumption.
“Typically, we’ve seen a 10-20 per cent improvement in fuel consumption in the cars we’ve remapped but some people have seen even better cost savings than that.
“It’s not only businesses that can benefit but any car or van can be remapped, in fact 80 per cent of our trade is with private car owners, and it also helps the environment by cutting emissions.
“For firms this could be the difference between staying in business and going bust. For a business that uses £100,000 of fuel a year saving £20,000 is a very big saving.
“It’s particularly important at the moment where so many businesses are looking to cut their costs because that is the only way of increasing their cash-flow.
“We have seen the price of fuel falling recently but that’s only likely to be a temporary reprieve,” Mike Walton Rapid Remap founder added.
Remapping involves digitally retuning the factory settings of a vehicle’s engine with specialist equipment and software. By adjusting the air fuel ratios, fuel volume, fuel pressure, torque limiters, boost pressure and various other key parameters large savings in fuel consumption are possible.
The adjustment can be done in less than 90 mins by connecting an electronic tuning device into the vehicles computer (ECU) which controls a car’s engine, and resetting the engine’s parameters. A remap by Rapid Remap on average costs between £200-400, less than the cost of a normal service. The remap does not harm the engine as long as it is done by a professional tuner.
Five Star Taxis have piloted the technology in three vehicles - a normal salon car and two eight-seater people carriers.
“We’ve seen savings of up to £70-a-week across the three vehicles, which together use about £250 worth of fuel a week. Over a year that’s been a saving of more than £3,600 on fuel which is easily a 20 per cent saving in the fuel cost for these vehicles,” said Mr Barnes.
“Every firm who is reliant of fuel should be using this technology, anyone can achieve savings of between 10 and 20 per cent of their fuel costs.”
Mobile valeting firm Detailed Reflections, based in Willenhall, have also benefited from a retuning from Rapid Remap.
“I’ve seen up to 15 per cent saving in fuel costs on my Ford Transit as a result of the remapping,” said firm owner Ryan Horton.
“It’s definitely saved money and the money I’ve spent on Rapid Remap I’ve easily gained back in fuel.
“You’ve got to make savings in these hard times and Rapid Remap has definitely made a big difference,” he said.
Simon Tulitt, director of policy at the Southern Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “With the potential savings this technology offers I’d urge every firm, particularly those with significant transport costs, to consider it.
“With savings of up to 20 per cent possible on fuel costs this could be the crucial factor for some firms to remain in business in these difficult trading conditions.”
Mike Walton added: “Our remapping service has an equally positive impact on the environment by cutting emissions. At the moment people might be looking to save money rather than save the environment but with remapping they can do both.
“At Rapid Remap we have an extensive range of equipment so we can carry out remapping on a large range of vehicles.
“The remap does also improve performance of the car making acceleration smoother, eliminating any flat spots and making the car easier to handle when towing or carrying a heavy load.
“We can adjust the engine to your needs and many people want a mixture between better fuel economy and performance,” he said. For further information visit www.rapidremap.co.uk where you will find answers to many of your questions and genuine testimonials from a range of customers
