Most Common Methods used in Modern Electronic Tuning
The 3 most common methods used to update the software in your ECU (Engine Control Unit) commonly called remapping or chip tuning
The end result is the same only the actual method varies.
Chip Tuning
This is possibly the most commonly used terminology, and refers to the process of removing (sometimes de-soldering) one or more memory chips from the ECU (engine control unit) and either reprogramming them with updated software or replacing them with entirely new chips.
BDM (background debugger mode)
Involves removing the ECU from the vehicle in the same way as you would for chip tuning, however instead of actually de-soldering a chip from the ECU, the required software files are accessed via the reading points on the PCB (printed circuit board) - a BDM device is required for this method
OBD - ECU Remapping
Involves reading and writing files to and from the ECU via the vehicles OBD (Diagnostic Port) This method avoids the need to remove the ECU from the vehicle and is now the most commonly used method, although if the tuner cannot get communication via the diagnostic port it may still be possible to use one of the methods described above.
Most modern vehicles can be electronically tuned using one of the methods above, however in some cases vehicles cannot be remapped at all, due to the technology used and lack of suitable devices to access the ECU, Chip or processor

Which Method is Best?
OBD Remapping (sometimes known as flashing) is usually the quickest option, although the actual results will be the same regardless of the method used.
The actual results achieved are relative to the quality of the software programming, rather than the method used to read and write the file to and from the ECU.
The quality of the software file produced for your vehicle is the most important factor relating to the performance of your engine.
